What’s YOUR Personal Style?
I have always believed that self-expression is the main ingredient when it comes to developing a unique personal style. Personal style isn’t about following the hottest trends and catwalk/magazine looks to a T, or trying to squeeze yourself into one single label to belong somewhere. Nor is it about copying A-listers style from top to toe without thinking twice.
Actresses, models, artists… they’re different from you. We all have a different set of mind, taste, attitude, coloring, body shape, face shape, height, lifestyle, etc. and there is simply just some styles that look better on others than you. We’re all individuals with unique minds and bodies and that should be expressed and accentuated in the way you dress.
I feel pretty comfortable and confident with the way I dress — and I’ve come a long ever since I became interested in my looks in my pre-teens. Here’s a short history of what type of styles I’ve had in the past:
If I only have two words to describe the styles I’ve had then it’s these:
Sporty-trendy (around age 12-13)
Rustic&girly (age 14-15, however I did have a short period where I experimented with hippie-Native Indian blouses)
Trendy-girly (age 15-17, ugh, I’m cringing as we speak. I wore too much pink and pastels)
Urban-trendy (age 17-19, yup I used to wear a lot of hoodies and loose-fitted jeans)
Classy-trendy (age 19-20. Started wearing classy pieces but in a college-fashion sort of way)
Classy-boho (age 20-now)
I would describe the style I’m wearing now mainly as classy because I’m really into sleek-looking fashion (most of my closet consists of black, brown and cream/off-white) but I often take it to the edge by combining it with other interesting styles based on different sides of my personality:
Boho – This reflects the casual side of myself and my great interest in exotic culture. I love ethnic-looking prints.
Vintage – I mix some vintage to express the nostalgic in me. I’m in love with the 50s and 60s. The sight of natural, distressed leather makes my heart sing.
Romantic – I’ve mentioned on my site that I’m a sucker for lace and ruffles. I’ve always been, still am, and I’ll always be until I die — a part of me has always been a girly-girl of me and lace ruffles are the only things that enhance that. I think adding a romantic element in your outfit can soften the look and make it look more feminine, which I absolutely loove
My point is that once you’ve found your main style (or label if you will, ex. classy, sporty, dramatic, etc.) try creating an original mix by throwing in other sides of your persona. Use your surroundings as inspiration but remember to add some ‘me’-flavor in your personal style — individuality is the spice of fashion, copycats kill it
Personality and taste aren’t the only factors that decide your personal style. Your body shape, face shape and coloring play a huge role here. You must get the clothes and colors right to really improve your appearance! A nice blouse that reflects your fabulous taste looks ugly on you if the color doesn’t compliment your complexion .
Start with analyzing your appearance and then think about your own personal style (your personality – what’s your signature style that tend to show in the way you dress?) Most of us have a variety of styles, but find your main label.
Try it – I think you might feel more comfortable and confident with yourself

Hey Nanne, thank you. I just published a post on what changes/updates you can expect on the fashion site. The Personal Style section is in progress but it'll probably be up by the end of this month

I always feel as if I never have anything good to wear, even though my closet is filled with clothes. I want to know how to look very chick for a person who wears skinny jeans all most all the time. I want know how to encorporate fashionable tops and garments to a skinny jean wardrobe.
Hi Vanessa, have you organized your clothes by clothing type? It’s easier to mix and match when everything is organized this way – you’ll know what you have in your closet (ie. bottom and top). How about experimenting with various color combinations and clothing styles?
I’ll keep your request in mind for future blog posts.
